So you bought into the idea that wash and go’s aren’t for your naturally kinkier texture? You opted out of wearing your hair free in your wash and go (or wash and fro) for fear that your natural curls are “too much” for the work place and other environments. Twist out’s, braids, or even straightening seem like more acceptable options for work. If either of these describes your current situation…..
PLEASE STOP!
Hair product ads put out images that make consumers buy into an “ideal” curl pattern. You’re left feeling like your hair doesn’t measure up and therefore opt out of wash and go’s completely saying things like “they just don’t work for my hair”.
And don’t worry, you aren’t alone. I too silently suffered and hid my curls with twist outs, braid outs and buns.
In over a decade of being natural, I spent the first three years terrified of the wash and go. I remember the days when I was fearful to wake up to a still damp twist out because I knew the shrinkage was coming. I’d resort to a bun to escape a style gone wrong.
My issue you ask? I was ashamed of my texture and spent very little time learning my hair. Just being honest. I knew my curls were not of the loose and wavy kind so I did twist outs to closely mimic the curl pattern I wished I had. If my hair wasn’t in a twist out, it wasn’t “done”! PERIOD.
One day I just got fed up with the amount of time I was spending start to finish on my hair. Not only did it take hours to wash, detangle, deep condition, twist, and fully dry, I found I needed to re-twist at night to hold my definition. I was tired and my life was busy enough without having to do my hair.
The change for me was simple. I needed more time back in my day to do the things that I loved the most so I decided to simply wear MY curls. The first few days were…..different. LOL it took me some time to get used to seeing my hair this way. Again, I was so used to the twirl of a twist that I really didn’t know my hair. These days, I can’t see my hair any other way. Don’t ever tell yourself that your curls aren’t good enough to wash and go. Don’t tell yourself that your curls are too kinky to wear out naturally. Your texture is YOUR texture. Your curls are YOUR curls. No one else has it so why not embrace what is uniquely yours?
While wash and go’s may seem intimidating, I’m here to take away the anxiety and frustration associated with achieving this look and wearing it out in public.
Imagine what it will feel like to ditch “the production” that comes with your current hair care routine? Think about that for a minute……..No more 5 hour time blocks for doing hair?! What could you do with those extra hours after cutting your regimen time in half? Or how about the feeling of not having to worry about your style. You do it once and it actually lasts a few days?! With all the extra time being put back into your life, you could start a business or finish a book. Whatever works for you.
